Baron Munchausen was a fictional teller of tall tales. The mental illness commonly referred to as Munchausen Syndrome by Proxy was named after him. People (usually a parent or other caregive) who suffer from this illness will intentionally make their child sick so as to gain sympathy and attention from relatives and health care professionals.
